Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Fueled by the slew of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and coal-fired plant retrofits across the U.S., Black & Veatch (B&V) (Overland Park, Kansas), a leading engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) company, is looking at an improving backlog and a strengthening presence in some of the fastest-growing corners of the energy industry. Industrial Info is tracking $34.87 billion in projects that involve B&V in some capacity, almost 60% of which are attributed to the 10 highest-valued projects, and all but a handful of which are in the Power or Oil & Gas Production industries.
Although the bulk of its active projects are in the U.S., Black & Veatch also has a strong presence in South America, the Middle East, China, India and Southeast Asia.
The largest project involving B&V is Veresen Incorporated's (TSX:VSN) (Calgary, Alberta) closely watched $6 billion Jordan Cove LNG Liquefaction Plant in Coos Bay, Oregon. The facility, for which B&V is performing EPC services with Kiewit Corporation (Omaha, Nebraska), is expected to have a capacity of 6 million tons per year of liquefied natural gas (LNG). For more information, see Industrial Info's project report, and June 8, 2016, article - Kiewit's 10 Top-Valued Projects Cover Offshore Drilling, LNG and Light Rail.
B&V's second-largest project in the Oil & Gas Production Industry is Annova LNG LLC's $1.25 billion LNG liquefaction processing/export terminal in Brownsville, Texas, for which B&V is performing engineering services. The project, which is the first of three phases, involves constructing a 2 million-ton-per-year LNG-processing plant, comprising two 1 million-ton-per-year trains and a 160,000-cubic-meter storage tank. It will make use of B&V's PRICO process technology. Annova LNG is a subsidiary of Exelon Corporation (NYSE:EXC) (Chicago, Illinois). For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Gas for the facility will be sourced from the Eagle Ford Shale. Some controversy has surrounded the Brownsville project, as it is being built just south of the Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge. Earlier this year, Annova agreed to move part of the complex to accommodate endangered ocelots.
B&V's largest project in the Power Industry is one of the few coal-fired power plants to have a serious chancge of being built: Power4Georgians LLC's $4 billion Washington County Generating Station near Sandersville, Georgia. The facility is designed to use an IHI supercritical, pulverized, coal-fired boiler and an 850-megawatt (MW) steam turbine generator. B&V is performing engineering services, while AMEC Foster Wheeler plc (NYSE:AMFW) (London, England) is slated for compliance. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Power4Georgians' project flies in the face of declining support for coal-fired power in the U.S., where lower natural gas prices and toughening government regulations have nearly eradicated new-build coal-power projects. But early last month, the company asked the state of Georgia for another 18 months to break ground, after its latest air permit from the state's Environmental Protection Division expired in mid-April, according to The Telegraph, a newspaper in the city of Macon. The company says it needs clarification on rules for greenhouse gas emissions from federal environmental regulators before it can complete the design and commence construction.
The largest project involving B&V to be under construction is also the company's largest in the Metals & Minerals Industry: BHP Billiton plc's (NYSE:BHP) (Melbourne, Australia) Escondida seawater desalinization plant in Antofagasta, Chile. The facility, which will employ reverse osmosis technology, initially will produce 2,500 liters per second and supply the Escondida copper mine. B&V's Chilean subsidiary is performing EPC services, while Bechtel's is handling construction management. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Earlier this year, B&V received the Distinction Award for Desalination Company of the Year at the 2016 Global Water Summit in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. According to a company press release, B&V was recognized for its desalination projects and research efforts that "push the boundaries of holistic water treatment and management."
The six other highest-valued projects to involve B&V are:
