Block Island Windfarm Begins Operations in Rhode Island
The recently completed Block Island Windfarm, which is the first offshore windfarm in North America, began commercial operations last month
The 30-megawatt (MW) project, which is owned by Deepwater Wind LLC (Providence, Rhode Island), is located about 3 miles southeast of Block Island, Rhode Island, and is expected to supply the majority of the island's electricity. It had a total investment of $290 million and employed more than 300 local specialty workers during construction.
The first, 18-week construction phase was completed in December 2015, and the turbines were commissioned recently. During the first phase of construction, five steel jacket foundations were installed to support the turbines. During the final stage of construction this fall, contractors installed the turbine towers and blades, and completed commissioning of the five turbines. The project utilizes five 6-MW General Electric turbines and is generating enough energy to power approximately 17,000 homes and businesses.
