Blue Flint Ethanol Moving Forward with Construction on a New Fuel Ethanol Plant in North Dakota
Construction began earlier this month on an $85 million facility that will process 18 million bushels of corn per year into 50 million gallons of ethanol per year

Blue Flint Ethanol, LLC (Underwood, North Dakota), a joint venture between Great River Energy (Elk River, Minnesota) and Headwaters, Incorporated (South Jordan, Utah), is moving forward with construction activity on a new fuel ethanol plant in Underwood, North Dakota. Construction began earlier this month on an $85 million facility that will process 18 million bushels of corn per year into 50 million gallons of ethanol per year and produce enough distillers dried grain to feed 225,000 head of area cattle.
The company selected Fagen, Incorporated (Granite Falls, Minnesota) to provide the process technology for the project and will also aid in the construction of the plant.

Great River Energy is the second largest electric utility in the state, based on generating capacity, and the fourth largest generation and transmission (G&T) cooperative in the U.S. in terms of assets. Great River provides wholesale electric service to 28 distribution cooperatives in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Those member cooperatives distribute electricity to approximately 590,000 homes, businesses and farms.
Blue Flint is the second fuel ethanol plant currently under construction in North Dakota, Red Trail Energy in Richardton is building the other. Two additional plants are presently operational in the state and are owned by ADM and Alchem. Three additional projects are scheduled to begin construction this year and once all six plants are in operation by early 2008, North Dakota will have the capacity of producing over 200 million gallons annually of the renewable fuel.
