Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland)--French construction firm Bouygues S.A. (Paris, France) has signed final contracts worth at least 1.7 billion euro ($1.8 billion) with Électricité de France SA (EPA:EDF) (Paris, France) for the Hinkley Point C nuclear power project in the U.K..

The company said that its U.K. subsidiary Bouygues Travaux Publics (TP) will work with U.K construction major Laing O'Rourke (Dartford, England) on the main civil works. The work will involve construction of the buildings that will house the two European Pressurised Reactor (EPR) nuclear reactors designed by French engineering firm AREVA SA (EPA:AREVA) (Paris, France).

Hinkley Point C will be the first new nuclear plant in the U.K. for more than a quarter of a century and will supply 7% of the nation's power when commissioned. It will have a total generating capacity of 3,300 megawatts (MW). Final contracts for the £18 billion ($23.7 billion) project were signed with the U.K. government last October. For additional information, see October 6, 2016, article--All Systems Go for Hinkley Point C Nuclear Project.

Philippe Bonnave, Chairman and Chief Executive of Bouygues Construction, stated: "We are proud to have been selected by EDF for this extraordinary project, a choice that reflects Bouygues Construction's expertise in the field of nuclear civil engineering. We will be undertaking this project alongside Laing O'Rourke, our internationally renowned British partner. We share the same values and give the same priority to employee safety and the importance of skilled workers."

Up to 3,500 workers will be onsite at peak construction times, the company stated.

Bouygues has a long history of working with EDF on what it termed "second-generation" nuclear plants in France, including Bugey, Saint-Alban and Chooz. It has also worked on the two existing and delayed EPR nuclear plants at Olkiluoto in Finland and in Flamanville, France.

Last year, AREVA landed contracts worth 5 billion euro ($5.6 billion) at the Hinkley Point C project, to supply two nuclear steam supply systems, from design and supply to commissioning. AREVA also will design, supply, install and commission the plant's operational and safety instrumentation and control system.
