Written by Amir Richani for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--By June of this year, the Brazilian Ministry of Energy and Mines had registered a total of 52 requests from data centers in the states of Ceará, Bahia, São Paulo, Rio Grande do Sul, Rio Grande do Norte and Rio de Janeiro to be connected to the National Interconnected System for power supply.
If approved, these data centers would have an electricity demand of 13.2 GW per year by 2035.
Of the 52 applications, 18 have already received approval from the ministry for connecting to the grid through ordinances, while another 34 are still under review. Throughout this year, the states of Bahia and Rio Grande do Sul received approval for one project each, and four additional projects were accepted by the ministry in São Paulo.
By May last year, there were only 12 data center projects registered in the ministry, representing a 330% increase year-on-year.
The country has become a key destination for the development of data centers, in part thanks to its attractive renewable power matrix, which is dominated by hydropower. Meanwhile, solar and wind power generation is expected to grow significantly in the next few years.
At the same time, the Brazilian government recently promoted the development of data centers with a visit by the nation's Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad, to Silicon Valley in May.
The country is projecting investments in data centers of 2 trillion reais (about US$352 billion) in the next 10 years.
"Our country has a very important role to play in the expansion of artificial intelligence and data storage services, as we have energy resources and a renewable energy matrix. We are moving forward to make the regulatory environment even more attractive and to strengthen the energy and technological infrastructure in all regions," said Energy Minister Alexandre Silveira.
