CEL Postpones Tender Again for Detailed Design of Cimarron Hydroelectric Project

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--In December 2008, El Salvador's Comision Ejecutiva Hidroelectrica del Rio Lempa (CEL) (San Salvador) launched a bidding process to develop the detailed design of the 261-megawatt (MW) El Cimarron Hydroelectric Power Plant, to be built at the highest point of the Lempa River in El Salvador.

CEL authorities announced that bidding rules were available from December 2008 through February 16, 2009. However, they decided to extend the bidding deadline to March 24. El Cimarron, with an estimated cost of nearly $500 million, would involve the construction of a dam and the use of a 15.3-square-kilometer reservoir. The plant would have four Pelton Vertical Axis turbines and generate an average of 687 gigawatt-hours per year. Power would be sent to the national grid by way of a 230-kilovolt, 35-kilometer transmission line. Construction is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2010.
