Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Pacific Gas & Electric (San Francisco, California), a subsidiary of PG&E Corporation (NYSE:PCG) (San Francisco, California), has selected Chicago Bridge & Iron (NYSE:CB&I) (Cincinnati, Ohio) to engineer, procure and dismantle the 65-megawatt Unit 3 at the Humboldt Bay Nuclear Power Plant in Eureka, California.
Unit 3 began operations in 1963 and was shut down for a routine refueling outage and seismic modifications in July 1976. But PG&E's analysis concluded that it was not cost-effective to restart the unit, so in 1985 the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) placed Unit 3 in SAFSTOR (safe storage) decommissioning status.
The decommissioning process is in its sixth year. Site preparation is under way with the removal of the reactor internals, which started in 2012. As this is a major project, all equipment will have to be removed and put in storage, followed by site restoration. The project is scheduled to start in spring 2014, with completion at the end of 2018. The total investment value is estimated to be nearly $290 million.
