China Datang's Changheba Hydropower Station Receives Approval

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--China Datang Corporation's (Beijing) 2,600-megawatt (MW) Changheba Hydropower Station received approval from the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) on November 10, 2010.

Changheba Hydropower Station, located in Kangding County in the Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Southwest China's Sichuan province, is the 10th cascade hydropower project planned on the mainstream portion of the Dadu River.

The dam site will be 4 to 7 kilometers downstream of the Jintang Confluence, which is about 82 kilometers downstream of Danba county downtown and 49 kilometers upstream of Luding county downtown. The project is mainly comprised of a 240-meter-high and 1,697-meter-long earth-core rockfill dam with a total rockfill volume of about 33 million cubic meters. The dam will have a spillway and a powerhouse furnished with four Francis hydraulic turbine generating units, each with output capacities of 650 MW.

Upon completion, the project will have a total reservoir capacity of 1.075 billion cubic meters, including 415 million cubic meters of additional storage to help regulate the level of the main reservoir.

The project will be built and operated by Sichuan Datang International Ganzi Hydropower Development Company Limited (Kangding, Sichuan), a joint venture of Datang International Power Generation Company Limited (SHA:601991) (Beijing) (80%) and Ganzi Prefecture Gantou Hydropower Development Company Limited (Kangding, Sichuan) (20%). Total investment in the project is expected to be about $3.46 billion.

Presently, the project is being prepared for construction. According to the schedule, first unit of the project is expected to begin operation in later 2016 and the whole project is to complete in April 2018.
