China Huaneng Group Begins Operation of CHP Project in Xinjiang

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Unit 1 of China Huaneng Group's (Beijing) Fukang Thermal Power Plant, the first combined heat and power (CHP) project in Xinjiang, passed the 96-hour trial operation and was put into commercial operation on November 2, 2010. This marks that China Huaneng's energy development in Xinjiang had entered into a new stage, China Huaneng Group announced on November 8, 2010.

Huaneng Fukang Thermal Power Plant, located in Fukang County, in the Changji prefecture of the Xinjiang Autonomous Region, is being developed and operated by Huaneng Fukang Thermal Power Company Limited, a subsidiary of Huaneng Xinjiang Energy Development Company Limited (Urumqi, Xinjiang). Phase I of the power plant will be furnished with two 135-megawatt (MW) Chinese-made double pump, condensing coal-fired units, which required a total investment of about $216 million. Construction of the project will be about two years.

As reported, the project is furnished with environmental protection facilities, including a desulfurization system; a continuous online flue-gas monitoring system; low-NOx combustion technology; advanced electrostatic dust removers; and four sewage processing systems to dispose of wastewater with coal content, wastewater with oil content, wastewater from general plant operations, and wastewater from desulfurization. The project is also furnished with a dry ash comprehensive utilization system to turn fly ash into cement and construction bricks.

Construction of the CHP project officially began in March 2009. Unit 2 will be commissioned by the end of this year. Upon completion, the project will be able to supply heat for an area of 2 million square meters and generate 1,300 gigawatt-hours of electricity every year, which will supply power to support the swift economic development in the east of Changji prefecture and greatly improve the local environment through concentrated heat supply.
