Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--China Huaneng Group's (Beijing) 1,320-megawatt (MW) coal-fired Anyuan project received final approval from the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) on July 18, 2012, according to an announcement from China Huaneng on July 26.

According to the approval of the NDRC, the project will be built to replace smaller units with a larger one. About 302 MW of small coal-fired units, (including two coal-fired units that have a total of 260 MW) that were in the former Huaneng Anyuan Power Plant (located in Xiangdong District of Pingxiang City in Central China's Jiangxi Province) will be built at a new site in Luxi Industrial Park of Pingxiang City. Two 660-MW, ultra-supercritical, coal-fired units that have highly efficient electrostatic dust remover, flue gas desulfuration and denitration devices also will be built at the new site. The total investment of the project will be about $720 million. The project will be built and operated by Huaneng Power International Corporation Limited (SHA:600011) (HPI) (Beijing), which is the listed flagship of China Huaneng Group.

In response to the nation's policy on energy conservation and emission reduction, HPI decided to build two 600-MW, ultra-supercritical, coal-fired units at a new site by shutting down the two old units in its former Anyuan power plant.

On May 6, 2012, the groundbreaking ceremony for the project was held in Luxi Industrial Park. With the official approval from the NDRC, construction of the project will be ready to kick off shortly. According to the schedule, both units of the project will begin operations in 2014. Upon completion, the project will become the first large-scale supportive power source project in western Jiangxi. It will greatly improve the safety and operation stability in Jiangxi Grid, and obviously alleviate the power shortage in the western region of the Jiangxi province.
