China's National Energy Administration (NEA) recently approved two coal mine projects in the Xinjiang Autonomous Region that had already begun development, an indication that the government is gradually getting a handle on a huge number of unauthorized coal mining projects.
Approvals were granted for the Wucaiwan No. 2 and Weizigou coal mines.
Wucaiwan No. 2, which is located in Jimusar County, Changji Prefecture, represents a $149 million investment by Xinjiang Tianlong Hope Energy Company Limited. Phase I of the project has a planned output of 4 million metric tons per year.
Weizigou, located in Hutubi County, Changji Prefecture, represents a $320 million investment by China Coal Energy Xinjiang Hongxin Coal Company Limited.
