Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Industry experts predict that by 2010, China's demand for polyacrylamide will reach 400,000 tons a year. Polyacrylamide is mainly used in oil exploration, water treatment and paper making in China. It is also used in textile, mining, sugar refining and the Pharmaceutical Industry. Experts say that oil-field needs will decrease, while the needs of water treatment and paper-making will increase.
In 2002, the manufacturing capacity of polyacrylamide in China was 200,000 tons, and the actual production was 150,000 tons. In 2006, the manufacturing capacity increased to 500,000, while the actual production went up to 320,000 tons.
Between 2002 and 2006, the average annual import of polyacrylamide increased 15%. China imported 26,200 tons of polyacrylamide in 2006. However, as Japanese Arakawa Chemical Industries, Seiko PMC Corporation and Harima Chemical Incorporated continue to increase their investment in polyacrylamide production in China, imports are expected to drop. The forecast of polyacrylamide imports in 2010 is about 200,000 tons.
In 2006, China consumed 318,700 tons of polyacrylamide. About 78.5% was used in oil exploration, 11% was used to treat water, and 7.8% was consumed by paper-making industry. Textile and other industries account for the remaining 2.7%.
In 2006, 35,000 tons of polyacrylamide was used by the water treatment industry. As many medium-sized and large cities use polyacrylamide as supplement, it is estimated that by 2010, 48,000 tons of polyacrylamide will be needed by the water-treating industry. China is a large maker and consumer of paper. About 65 million tons of cartons were made in China in 2006, consuming 25,000 tons of polyacrylamide. By 2010, China's paper-making capacity is expected to go up to 94 million tons, raising the polyacrylamide need to 40,000 tons accordingly.
