Coal-Fired Power Projects Moving Forward in Chile
Power generator AES S.A.'s (NYSE:AES) (Santiago, Chile) 270-megawatt Campiche coal-fired power project, which is scheduled to go online in 2013, has completed half of its construction.

The Campiche project, which is situated in Chile's Region V, involves the construction of a 270-MW, coal-fired facility that is equipped with an Ansaldo Steam turbine generator attached to a Doosan watertube boiler. The plant's officials told Industrial Info that they have just finished positioning the boiler dome.
There are 18 coal-fired power projects in Chile that are under development, totaling an investment of $11.3 billion. There are five projects in engineering phases and seven in the planning phase, totaling $8.5 billion.
From that total, more than 600 MW of new coal-fired generation are awaiting environmental approval. These projects include the 152-MW Guacolda; a 152-MW coal-fired unit addition; the 50-MW Pirquenes; the 110-MW Patache; and the 350-MW Rio Seco. The 750-MW Mejillones coal units addition is currently in the purchasing process.
