Coal Output by Northwest China's Shaanxi Province Hits Record High in 2014

Researched by Industrial Info Resources China (Beijing, China)--Coal output in Northwest China's Shaanxi province reached a record 515 million tonnes in 2014, an increase 4.4% over 2013, according to region's the Coal Production and Safety Supervision Administration. The amount of coal sold by the province also surpassed 500 million tonnes. Shaanxi is the third-highest region in China in terms of coal production and sales.

China's coal market has remained weak due to slowing economic growth. Output and sales have fallen in other major coal-producing regions, such as Shanxi and Inner Mongolia. Shaanxi province launched a series of measures in promoting coal production and sales, including the cancellation of irregular local taxes and charges, suspension of coal price regulating fund collections, as well as a reduction of highway tariffs for coal haulers.

Shaanxi shut down 22 small coal mines in 2014, thereby eliminating 5.66 million tonnes of inefficient production. The province has accelerated its coal mine consolidation and modernization program. Shaanxi approved 294 coal mine consolidations and 63 modernization projects in 2014. Output from mid- and large-scale coal mines reached 480 million tonnes, or 93.2% the total production. By area, production in coal-mining zones such as Yulin, Binchang and Huangling reached 469 million tonnes, accounting for 91.01% of the total.

Last year, four coal mines with total production capacity of 18.4 million tonnes per year received final approval; and eight coal mines with a production capacity of 22.2 tonnes per year received preliminary approval.

In 2014, seven grassroot coal mines and two coal mine expansions, with 28 million tonnes per year in production capacity, were commissioned in the province. A total of 48 consolidation and modernization projects, with production capacity of 33.9 million tonnes per year, were put into operation.
