Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Three years ago, STIHL, Incorporated underwent a $60.8 million 135,000 square-foot warehouse expansion of its Virginia Beach facility to house finished goods, which created 200 jobs. Now, STIHL has begun construction on a $78 million expansion at the same facility in Virginia Beach. The proposed two-phased expansion is currently underway with construction on phase I taking place. This phase is centered on a $20 million power equipment manufacturing plant. Construction began in February 2006, and will consist of constructing a 60,000 square-foot plant to house manufacturing for STIHL guide bars, which will be used on saws. This will be the first time guide bars have been manufactured by STIHL in the United States. Completion is slated for August 2006.
Henderson Associates, located in Norfolk, Virginia, is providing architectural services for both of the expansions and Compo Construction Company, also located in Norfolk, Virginia, was awarded the general construction contract for both phases.
STIHL, Incorporated, founded in 1974 in Virginia Beach, Virginia, is a subsidiary of ANDREAS STIHL AG & Company KG (Waiblingen, Germany). It is one of seven manufacturing facilities in the STIHL Group. STIHL, Incorporated employs approximately 1,600 people worldwide, which includes the 1,350 in Virginia Beach. STIHL manufactures the worlds largest selling brand of chain saws and powerful lightweight and versatile handheld outdoor power equipment. STIHL is currently the only chain saw manufacturer that manufactures its own guide bars in Germany and its chain saw in Switzerland.
