The construction of data centers is increasingly becoming big business throughout the U.S., and Whiting-Turner is involved in some of the highest-value data center projects in the country. Among these is Google parent company Alphabet Incorporated's (NASDAQ:GOOGL) (Mountain View, California) construction of a brownfield data center in Clarksville, Tennessee. The facility is being constructed at the site of a former semiconductor plant and will include several buildings to enable colocation and Google computing services. Construction on the $600 million project began in early 2018 and is expected to wrap up in the second quarter of this year. Whiting-Turner is the general contractor, and AECOM (NYSE:ACM) (Los Angeles, California) is the engineer. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Other data center projects involving Whiting-Turner include Corporate Office Properties Trust's (Columbia, Maryland) grassroot data center in Sterling, Kentucky, which entails constructing a 211,800-square-foot data hall with supporting equipment and systems to provide regional data storage facilities and support. Construction kicked off last summer and is expected to last about a year. The project could be followed by a Phase II expansion, which would kick off this summer. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on Phase I and Phase II.

Related to the rise in the country's data centers is an increase in e-commerce, and one of Whiting-Turner's biggest projects involves the leader in the field, Amazon.com Incorporated (NASDAQ:AMZN) (Seattle, Washington). Whiting-Turner is constructing a grassroot air services hub for the company in Hebron, Kentucky, near the Ohio border and close to Cincinnati. The facility is being constructed on a 920-acre site and will include a 3 million-square-foot building featuring a 350,000-square-foot loading dock, more than 100 aircraft parking spaces, and equipment and systems to handle more than 200 aircraft takeoffs and landings per day. Construction began in the first half of last year and is expected to be completed in the summer of 2021. Whiting-Turner is acting as general contractor with Kokosing Construction Company Incorporated (Fredericktown, Ohio). For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Whiting-Turner is a leading contractor in the Pharmaceutical-Biotech Industry, and Industrial Info is tracking more than $2.8 billion in projects involving the company in this sector. In Palo Alto, California, Whiting-Turner is performing a building addition for Stanford University to house the chemistry, engineering and medicines programs along with the university's Neurosciences Institute. The building will hold 40 laboratories along other instructional and administrative space. Construction began in 2016 and is wrapping up soon. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

In Storrs, Connecticut, Whiting-Turner is constructing a STEM research center for the University of Connecticut that includes a LEED-certified building with wet and dry lab space, a clean room, auditorium, teaching labs, and administrative space. Whiting-Turner is the construction manager, and Payette (Boston, Massachusetts) is providing architect-engineering services. The project began last summer and is expected to wrap up in late summer 2021. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
