Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Custom architectural millwork solutions are evolving as design trends change and new technology and materials are integrated in innovative features. In commercial environments, creative products are being sought for pantries, cabinetry, shelving, storage, seating, desks and feature walls.

Manufacturers are using a mixture of walnut and Corian for benchtop surfaces for a more modern aesthetic. Also, light emitting diode (LED) lighting has many advantages in such environments, such as lower energy consumption, longer lifetimes and smaller sizes, causing the industry to figure out how to better mount them and account for more precise current and heat management. Incorporating technology in unexpected places is integrated in the millwork industry. For example, clients may ask for ways to track foot traffic in pantry areas, lobbies and communal areas to better serve the employees. Also, the "wow factor" in seeing data communications is playing a significant role in the design of conference tables for commercial clients. There is a growing demand for engineering and wiring applications in the workplace so employees can use the latest technology to maintain productivity.

According to Woodworking Network, shortages of interior finishers and millworkers have risen. Sixty-six percent of millwork industry contractors expect to employ more workers in the next six months, but finding skilled and experienced workers continues to fall short, as a result of younger people not entering the building trades and older workers retiring.

Industrial Info is tracking $105 million in U.S. millwork projects:

  • Genesis Products Incorporated (Elkhart, Indiana) is constructing a $10 million panel millwork manufacturing plant in Goshen, Indiana. Construction of the 200,000-square-foot facility began this spring and is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter this year. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

  • In Tupelo, Mississippi, Renin Corporation (Brampton, Ontario) plans to undertake a $1 million upgrade beginning this fall for its closet and barn door manufacturing plant. The work will include equipment relocation and installation of CNC machining centers and milling machines. Completion of the upgrade is expected in early 2018. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

  • Glenn Rieder (Milwaukee, Wisconsin) is constructing an $8.5 million architectural millwork manufacturing plant in West Allis, Wisconsin. It consists of a 120,000-square-foot facility, plus installation of production lines and equipment. Construction began in June and is expected to be completed in late 2017. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

  • In Norwalk, Iowa, Windsor Windows & Doors Incorporated (West Des Moines, Iowa) plans to build a $10.5 million windows and doors manufacturing plant beginning this fall. Construction of the 160,000-square-foot facility is expected to be completed in summer 2018. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

  • Phase III of Reeb Millwork's $75 million door manufacturing plant expansion in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, includes a 295,000-square-foot building. Construction is expected to begin in spring 2020 and is expected to be completed in fall that same year. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
