Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--City Water, Light and Power (Springfield, Illinois) has a new 200-megawatt (MW) unit in startup and commissioning. The new Dallman Power Station Unit 4 addition cost $542 million and took four years to build.
The Foster Wheeler (NASDAQ:FWLT) boiler will burn 700,000 tons of pulverized coal each year and will employ a number of environmental-control technologies, including low nitrogen-oxide (NOx) burners, and a selective catalytic reduction system that also removes NOx. Siemens Environmental Systems Services (SESS) provided the remainder of the environmental control technologies, including, activated carbon injection for mercury removal, a fabric filter baghouse to address fine particulates, a wet flue-gas desulfurization unit for the removal of sulfur dioxide emissions and a wet electrostatic precipitator to remove acid mist and ultra-fine particulates from the boiler flue gas. These technologies are currently the best available control technologies for emission reduction in coal-fired power plants. The steam turbine generator was manufactured by Toshiba International Corporation (Tokyo, Japan).
The new unit will enable City Water, Light & Power to retire its Lakeside Power Station units 6 and 7, which are rated at 37 MW each and were placed into service in 1961 and 1965, respectively. The new unit and the closure of the old units will result in a net power gain of 126 MW.
