Easily one of Iowa's largest underway projects is Microsoft Corporation's (NASDAQ:MSFT) (Redmond, Washington) data center complex in West Des Moines. Construction on the first phase of the project kicked off in 2019 and includes a 256,000-square-foot data center that is expected to be completed early next year. This was followed in 2020 by a second and third building of 256,000 square feet and 241,000 square feet, construction of which is expected to wrap up by the end of 2022. The Midwest is known for its wind power generation, and Iowa provides a key location in the transition to renewable energy. Among the wind power projects underway in the state is NextEra Energy Incorporated's (NYSE:NEE) (Juno Beach, Florida) Phase II construction of its Heartland Divide Windfarm near Hamlin, in the west of the state, between Des Moines and Omaha, Nebraska. The project will add about 200 megawatts (MW) of generating capacity to the facility through the addition of 71 2.8-MW turbines. The project kicked off this summer, and construction is expected to last about a year. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Power Project Database can click here for the project report.
While not quite as prominent, solar power also plays a role in Iowa's project activity. EDF Renewable Energy (Minneapolis, Minnesota) is constructing its Holiday Creek photovoltaic facility near Badger. The facility is being constructed on a 957-acre site and will use approximately 200,000 First Solar (NASDAQ:FSLR) (Tempe, Arizona) solar modules on a fixed-tilt track system to generate 100 MW. Construction kicked off this summer, with Blattner Energy Incorporated (Avon, Minnesota) providing engineering, procurement and construction services. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of next year. Subscribers can click here for the project report.
One of the U.S.' largest privately held companies, Cargill Incorporated (Minnetonka, Minnesota), is expanding its corn milling and ethanol plant in Eddyville, Iowa. Cargill is constructing a new production facility, including new bioprocessing and fermentation machinery, and a research and development center and is making improvements to the wastewater system to increase capacity. The project recently kicked off and is expected to wrap up in mid-2024. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Food & Beverage Project Database can click here for the project report.
