Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland) -- Danish energy firm, Dong Energy's (Fredericia, Denmark), has announced that it is going ahead with the 1 billion ($1.3 billion) Westermost Rough offshore windfarm off the U.K.'s east coast.
Located eight kilometers (km) off the Yorkshire coast, the windfarm covers an area of 35 square kilometers and will feature 35 turbines with a rated generating capacity of 6-megawatts (MW) each. Westermost Rough will have a combined generating capacity of 210 MW when completed, enough for approximately 200,000 homes.
The next generation turbines will be supplied by Siemens Wind Energy (NYSE:SI) (Munich, Germany), and have just begun testing in U.K. waters. Last week, Dong announced that the first two of the SWT-6.0-154 6 MW turbines will be commissioned for testing at its Gunfleet Sands III demonstration project, off the U.K. coast. For additional information, see February 5, 2013, article -- U.K. Tests Largest Offshore Wind Turbines
"The size and location of the project is very well suited as the first large-scale project with the new Siemens 6 megawatt turbine," explained Henrik Poulsen, CEO of DONG Energy. "We are sure that this project is a good foundation in our continuous work to bring down the cost of offshore wind. The U.K. offshore wind market is the biggest in the world and we are confident that the U.K. market will continue to be a very interesting market to the offshore wind industry."
Offshore construction of the Westermost Rough offshore wind farm will begin in first half of 2014 and it is expected to be fully commissioned in the first half of 2015.
The SWT-6.0-154 has a rotor diameter of 154 meters, with blades measuring 75 meters.
