Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland)--The U.K. continues its dominance in the offshore wind sector with the inauguration of the 210-megawatt (MW) Westermost Rough windfarm.
Located 8 kilometers (km) off the east coast of northern England, the project is the first of its kind to use 6-MW turbines, which were supplied by German engineering firm Siemens AG (NYSE:SI) (Munich, Germany). The SWT-6.0-154 turbine has a 154-meter rotor, one of the longest in the world. Westermost Rough can generate enough electricity for about 150,000 homes.
The $1 billion project was commissioned just more than two months after the last of 35 turbines was installed. For additional information, see May 8, 2015, article - U.K.'s Latest Offshore Windfarm Completes Turbine Installation.
Westermost Rough is owned jointly by Danish energy firm DONG Energy (Fredericia, Denmark) (50%), Marubeni Corporation (Tokyo, Japan) (25%) and the U.K. Green Investment Bank (Edinburgh, Scotland) (25%).
Declaring Westermost Rough open, Lord Haskins, chairman of the Humber Local Economic Partnership, said: "The Humber is the U.K.'s Energy Estuary and the inauguration of this windfarm is further confirmation of the importance of the offshore wind industry for our area."
Shaun Kingsbury, the chief executive of U.K. Green Investment Bank, added: "Westermost Rough is a pioneering project that has helped advance the offshore wind sector across the world by utilizing new technology for the first time--increasing performance levels while decreasing costs. It has also been an important project in the development of the U.K. Green Investment Bank. It was our first construction-phase investment in the offshore wind sector; saw us enter into partnership with DONG Energy and Marubeni for the first time; and was the first project we have refinanced, attracting new investors."
Less than a month ago, the UK celebrated the opening of the world's second-largest offshore windfarm, Gwynt y Môr, situated 8 miles off the North Wales coast. Developed by RWE Innogy, the U.K. arm of energy giant RWE AG (OTC:RWEOY) (Essen, Germany), the flagship, 576-MW project will supply enough power for approximately 400,000 homes.
