Dow Iberica Schedules Major Maintenance Turnaround

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Tarragona, a city in southern Catalonia in northeastern Spain, houses one of the country's biggest industrial areas where The Dow Chemical Company's (NYSE:DOW) subsidiary, Dow Chemical Iberica S.A., has a chemical processing site that will undergo a major maintenance turnaround in the last quarter of 2011.

Dow Chemical Iberica S.A.'s facility in Tarragona is divided into two sites. One of them, known as Dow Sur (Dow South), is an olefins complex and has four major processing units: a 150,000-metric-ton-per-year, low-density polyethylene unit; a high-density polyethylene with the same processing capacity; a linear low-density polyethylene that produces 300,000 metric tons per year; and an elastic fiber plant. Dow South is separated by only a few miles from Dow Norte (Dow North), Dow Iberica's second site in Terragona. Dow Norte has the company's ethylene unit, with a capacity of 1.49 billion pounds per year. Four more units are in this facility: a 250,000-metric-ton-per-year polypropylene unit; a C4 aromatics; an octene monomer; and a propylene unit.

Company and plant authorities are currently planning the next major maintenance turnaround, which will take place within two years by the end of 2011. All processing units will undergo routine cleaning and maintenance, and the ethylene unit will receive special repairs that will demand an investment of about $20 million.
