The European Union's HYFLEXPOWER demonstration project in France is touted as a one-of-a-kind endeavor that will use electricity from renewable energy to produce hydrogen, which then can be stored and used to power a turbine. In essence, it is a means to store excess renewable electricity in the form of "green hydrogen," according to its developers.
The hydrogen also can be added to existing natural gas networks to generate power. Engie, Siemens, Centrax and other European consortium partners are planning to set up a 12-megawatt hydrogen-to-power facility at Engie's Smurfit Kappa pulp and paper facility in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of France. During periods of high demand, the stored hydrogen will then be used to generate electricity to be fed into the grid.
The EU is supporting the project through the Horizon 2020 framework program. Construction on the project is expected to begin by 2022.
