Expansion of Holtwood Hydroelectric Station Moves Forward with Planned Delivery of Second Turbine

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Holtwood Hydroelectric Power Station is owned by PPL Holtwood LLC, a subsidiary of PPL Corporation (NYSE:PPL) (Allentown, Pennsylvania). An expansion at the century-old facility consists of installing two vertical 62.5-MW Voith Hydro turbines from Kaplan, a joint venture of Voith GmbH (Heidenheim, Germany) and Siemens AG (NYSE:SI) (Munich, Germany) . Construction for the unit additions commenced in 2010 and is due to be complete in 2013. The project is about 60% complete.

The existing 10-unit Holtwood Station is in Martic Township, which is about 15 miles south of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and has a total generating capacity of about 108 megawatts (MW). Construction of the Holtwood Station started in 1905, and it has been generating electricity since 1910, using the power of water that is held back by a 55-foot-high dam across the Susquehanna River, between Lancaster and York counties. The power station employs about 15 personnel to operate and maintain it.

The delivery of a second, 150-ton turbine runner assembly is expected to take five days of actual travel plus another day parked (Sunday) at speeds of 0.6 to three miles per hour. In addition to the unit additions, PPL is improving the fish lifts to help with the migration up the Susquehanna River and its tributaries of the American shad.

In addition to the expansion behind the dam is 2,400-acre Lake Aldred, a popular boating and recreation area. PPL will transfer about 3,500 acres of company-owned land near the Holtwood plant as part of a broad public-private initiative that will preserve and protect this valuable land while enhancing its benefits to the public.
