Final Environmental Studies Under Way for Proposed $6 Billion Rail Extension in California

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Final Environmental Impact Studies (FEIS) are currently under way for the proposed $6.12 billion Silicon Valley Rapid Transit Corridor Bart Extension, planned in Fremont, California, by the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (San Jose, California).

The Draft Environmental Impact Study has been completed and FEIS is now under way for the proposed rail extension, which will consist of 16.1 miles of rail between Warm Springs (Fremont) and Santa Clara County and will include six stations. The FEIS is expected to be complete by October 2009. Preliminary design is now 65% complete with federal funding and a record of decision anticipated by 2010. A design-build firm will be selected in 2010 to complete final design and release construction-bid documents. Construction is anticipated to start in 2011 with utility relocations. Overall completion is slated for 2016.

Circle Point and Bechtel Infrastructure Corporation, both located in San Francisco, California, were selected to provide environmental and design services for the extension.

The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA), founded in 1973 by the Santa Clara County District, is responsible for public transit services, highway improvement projects, congestion management and countywide transportation planning for Santa Clara County, California. The company operates a light rail system, which opened in 1987 and consists of 42.2 miles of track, including two main lines and a spur line. The VTA also operates a bus line and currently has 62 light rail stations operating on three lines.
