Researched by Industrial Info Resources China (Beijing, China)--The first unit of China General Nuclear Power Corporation's (CGNPC) (Shenzhen, Guangdong) Yangjiang Nuclear Power Station passed a 168-hour demonstrative operation and began commercial operations on March 25, according to the CGNPC.

The number of operational nuclear power units in mainland China has reached 18, and the total installed capacity of nuclear power has grown to 17.78 gigawatts (GW) from 15.86 GW at six nuclear power bases. Nine of the operational nuclear power units, with a total installed capacity of 9.41 GW, are owned by the CGNPC, accounting for 59% of the total in mainland China. In addition, the CGNPC has 15 nuclear power units with a total installed capacity of 17.72 GW under construction, accounting for 54% of the total in mainland China.

The Yangjiang Nuclear Power Station is located in Dongping Town of Yangjiang City, in southern China's Guangdong province. Site selection for the project began in 1988. On November 12, 2008, the project received approval from the National Development and Reform Commission to build all six 1,000-megawatt (MW) nuclear power units, using CGNPC's CPR1000 pressurized water reactor technology continuously at one time.

Construction of Unit 1 was kicked off by China Nuclear Power Engineering Company Limited (Shenzhen), the general contractor, on December 16, 2008. Yangjiang Nuclear Power Company Limited (YNPC) (Yangjiang, Guangdong), a subsidiary of the CGNPC, with a joint investment from CLP Holdings Limited (002.HK) (Hong Kong), is responsible for the operation of the project.

According to the schedule, Unit 2 will begin operations later this year, and all six units will be operational in 2018.
