Researched by Industrial Info Resources China (Beijing, China)--The environment impact assessment (EIA) report for construction on the expansions of units 5 and 6 at China General Nuclear Corporation's (CGN) (Shenzhen, Guangdong) Yangjiang Nuclear Power Station has passed an examination by the Ministry of Environmental Protection (MEP).
The expansion will be on the northeast side of the four existing units that are under construction. The environmental protection facilities will account for $200 million (5%) of the expansion's $4 billion total investment.
The Yangjiang Nuclear Power Station is located at Shahuan in Dongping town of Yangjiang city, in southern China's Guangdong province. It is 36 kilometers from Yangjiang and 189 kilometers from downtown Guangzhou. Yangjiang Nuclear Power Company Limited (YNPC) (Yangjiang, Guangdong), a subsidiary of CGN, is responsible for the construction and the future operation of the project.
The power station is the second nuclear power station planned by CGN in the Guangdong province, with a proposed total capacity of six 1,000-megawatt (MW) nuclear power units based on CGNPC's CPR1000 pressurized water reactor technology. In November 2008, the project received approval to build all six units simultaneously from the National Development and Reform Commission. This created a total estimated investment of $16 billion.
The construction of Yangjiang Nuclear Power Station is progressing smoothly. The cold test for Unit 1 was completed on March 31, 2013, and the unit is under final commissioning. The civil work for units 2 and 3 is complete and is in the equipment erection and testing stage. Unit 4 is in the civil construction stage.
Site preparation of Unit 5 kicked off in March of this year. Unit 1 is projected to begin commercial operations by the end of 2013, and the project is to be completed in 2018.
