Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Approximately 14 major natural gas storage projects are currently in the early planning phase and as of yet have not been filed with the FERC. The total working gas of all 14 projects combined equates to just over 120 billion cubic feet (Bcf) of natural gas. The working gas capacity of the proposed projects range in size from Caledonia Energy Partners LLC Mississippi Projects 1.7 Bcf in working gas to the multi-state 18 Bcf Dominion Hub Project being proposed by Dominion Transmission Incorporated in New York, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia.
Eight of the fourteen project proposals are concentrated in the Gulf Coast states of Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi. Four of the projects are being planned in Mississippi with a total working gas capacity of 27.7 Bcf. Texas and Louisiana are host to two natural gas storage projects each representing 11 Bcf and 17 Bcf respectively. The 8 projects in these three states total 55.7 Bcf of working gas capacity or roughly 46% of the total working gas storage capacity currently in early pre-FERC planning.
The remaining 65.2 Bcf of proposed working gas capacity is concentrated in the Northeastern states. The states of New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, and West Virginia have a total of 39.9 Bcf of proposed working gas capacity. The balance of the 25.3 Bcf of proposed working gas capacity is located in Kentucky, Arizona, and Ohio with 6.8 Bcf, 3.5 Bcf, and 15 Bcf in proposed capacity respectively.
All fourteen of these projects are in the very early stages of development and hence are vulnerable to market analysis and cost studies that can demote them from an active project status to an on hold or even cancelled project status in short order. This is just a portion of the natural gas storage projects that Industrial Info is tracking in the US as part of its Natural Gas Database.
If natural gas storage projects in all phases of development are considered then the project count increases to 25 with a total investment value of $1.59 billion. This project count does not take into consideration the LNG importation sector and the storage that will be incorporated in these facilities that would add an additional 36 projects with a total investment value of $20.152 billion and would add several hundred Bcf of natural gas storage in liquid form.
