Reported by Annette Kreuger, Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The U.S. Great Lakes region, traditionally considered the heart of industrial manufacturing, has become an essential player in the life-science sector. In just the first three months of the new year, the region is set to launch 27 projects with a total investment value (TIV) of $483 million.

See below for a list of first-quarter 2015 life science project starts in the Great Lakes region.

Encompassing Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin, the Great Lakes region is home to nearly 430 operational facilities, ranging from elaborate higher-education research centers to biologic contract manufacturers (CMOs). Employing nearly 5,000 people in the region, the industry is an attractive target for economic development with its higher-than-average pay scale of $60,000 per year.

The largest of the first-quarter 2015 Great Lakes projects is located in Kankakee, Illinois. CSL Behring LLC (Bradley, Illinois) has plans to construct a $240 million plasma fractionation plant. When complete in 2017, the plant will be capable of producing up to 4 million liters per year of albumin/plasma intermediates, which then will be sent on to the company's operation in Bern, Switzerland. There, the intermediates will be used in the production of immunoglobulins, which are used to treat immune deficiencies. Fluor Corporation (NYSE:FLR) (Irving, Texas) is an essential project team member.

In neighboring Indiana, Eli Lilly (NYSE:LLY) (Indianapolis, Indiana) and subsidiary Elanco Animal Health (Greenfield, Indiana) are planning to invest $16 million to construct an animal health research laboratory in Greenfield. The Buckingham Companies (Indianapolis, Indiana) is the developer and general contractor for the project, which will add a 48,000-square-foot building to develop animal-related therapeutics. Construction is set to begin in March and will be complete in early 2016.

In Michigan, Muskegon Community College tapped the project team of BMA Architects (Muskegon, Michigan) and Clark Construction (Lansing, Michigan) to design and construct the $9.6 million expansion and renovation of an existing 20,000-square-foot science building. The addition of six multi-disciplinary research laboratories will boost the school's ability to offer up-to-date scientific instruction. Construction will be complete by the end of the year.
