Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Great Lakes region is home to a wide variety of projects in the chemical industry that are in advanced stages of development, from top companies such as Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG) (Cincinnati, Ohio) and DowDuPont (NYSE:DDP) (Midland, Michigan). Industrial Info is tracking more than $1.7 billion worth of chemical projects nearing or under construction in the Great Lakes region.

The Great Lakes region includes Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin.

Indiana has one of the highest total investment values (TIV) related to these projects, although almost all of it is attributed to just one: Philbro LLC's (Stamford, Connecticut) $450 million plant conversion in West Terre Haute, Indiana. The company plans to begin converting a former coal-gasification plant to an ammonia fertilizer plant in the fourth quarter. It will use petroleum coke from Midwest refineries as feedstock to produce about 1,500 tons per day of fertilizer. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report and April 13, 2018, article - Yara-BASF Opens Texas Ammonia Plant, More on the Way.

Ohio has the largest number of projects of any Great Lakes region state, with the proposed facilities covering a wide range of products: specialty chemicals, lubricants, and household products. Lubrizol Corporation is at work on a $100 million expansion of its lubricants plant in Painesville, Ohio, which is expected to boost production of acrylates and other chemicals used in lubricants and industrial fluids, while Procter & Gamble is constructing a $65 million addition to its soaps and detergents plant in Lima, Ohio, with equipment relocated from a recently closed plant in New Jersey.

Both expansions are scheduled to wrap up later this year. Lubrizol Corporation is a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway Incorporated (NYSE:BRK.A) (Omaha, Nebraska). For more information, see Industrial Info's reports on the Painesville and Lima projects.

Two other Ohio projects in their early construction phases are ASHTA Chemicals Incorporated's (Ashtabula, Ohio) $150 million addition to its alkalies and chlorine plant in Ashtabula, which will include a new membrane-cell process unit, and DowDuPont's $50 million renovation and expansion of a specialty chemicals plant in Cincinnati, which will remove idled units to expand alkyl polyglycoside capacity. For more information, see Industrial Info's reports on the Ashtabula and Cincinnati projects.

Later this year, Interstate Chemical Company Incorporated (Hermitage, Pennsylvania) expects to finish construction on its $40 million sodium methylate plant in Oregon, Ohio. The modular, skid-mounted plant is designed to produce 60 million pounds per year of sodium methylate for the biodiesel industry. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Kentucky also has a high TIV for chemical projects nearing or under construction, among them Cabot Corporation's (Boston, Massachusetts) $89 million fumed silica plant in Carrolton. The facility is expected to produce 8,820 tons per year of fumed silica, most of which will go to Dow Corning to be used as an additive in silicone products. Dow Corning also is to suppling feedstock for the plant. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Dow Chemical, which merged with DuPont last year to become DowDuPont, is in the early construction stages on a $25 million expansion of its adhesives and specialty polymers plant in Ringwood, Illinois. Dow plans to add a new, four-story building to increase production of specialty adhesives. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
