Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The opening of a world-scale ammonia plant in Freeport, Texas, marks one of several U.S. ammonia-production-related projects that will either be completed or start construction this year. In all, Industrial Info is tracking $5 billion in active U.S. ammonia project completions and construction kickoffs for 2018.

Yara International ASA (Oslo, Norway) and BASF Corporation (Florham Park, New Jersey), the North American affiliate of BASF SE (Ludwigshafen, Germany), announced on Wednesday the opening of the $600 million ammonia facility in Freeport. Yara owns 68% of the 750,000-metric-ton-per-year plant, while BASF owns 32%. Yara will market its share of the ammonia to North American industrial customers and the agricultural sector. BASF will use its share to produce polyamide 6, which is used in the production of carpet fibers and other products. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

A new ammonia storage facility at Port Freeport and upgrades to BASF's existing terminal and pipeline assets will support the ammonia plant. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Praxair, Incorporated (NYSE: PX) (Danbury, Connecticut) is supplying 170 million standard cubic feet per day of hydrogen and 2,000 tons per day of nitrogen to the Freeport plant for the production of ammonia. The plant will use hydrogen-based technology to forego the initial production step of using natural gas to produce the hydrogen, thereby lowering capital and maintenance costs.

On top of tracking $810 million in ammonia project completions this year, Industrial Info is following $4.21 billion in construction kickoffs.

In West Terre Haute, Indiana, Philbro LLC (Stamford, Connecticut) plans to convert a former coal gasification plant to an ammonia fertilizer plant, with an expected construction kickoff in fourth-quarter 2018. The coal gasification plant had supplied synthetic gas and steam to the Wabash River combined-cycle power station until the station was closed.

Following the conversion, the ammonia plant will use petroleum coke from Midwest refineries as feedstock. Philbro said in a 2016 press release that petroleum coke would be more economical than natural gas as feedstock. The plant is expected to produce 547,500 tons per year of ammonia upon its expected completion in fourth-quarter 2020. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

In Mount Vernon, Indiana, Midwest Fertilizer Company LLC (Indianapolis, Indiana) plans to build a grassroot 2,400-ton-per-day anhydrous ammonia plant. Pending capital approval, civil construction will kick off in fourth-quarter 2018, with completion expected in late 2021. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
