GWEC: Installed Wind Power Could Hit 4,000 Gigawatts by 2050
Global wind power installation grew by 44% in 2014
Released Tuesday, March 24, 2015
Written by Richard Finlayson, Senior International Editor for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) (Brussels, Belgium) reported that worldwide wind power installation grew 44% in 2014 with the addition of 51 gigawatts (GW). The increase points to a solid sign of the industry's recovery after a rough patch in the past few years, said the council. Total global wind capacity stood at about 370 GW at the end of 2014.
In a scenario analysis, GWEC examined three alternative growth trajectories for wind. The "advanced" scenario offers the possibility of global wind capacity reaching nearly 2,000 GW by 2030, which could supply 16% to 18% of global electricity demand, even if the wind power supply is intermittent.
Extrapolating the "advanced" scenario to 2050, there could be 4,000 GW of installed wind capacity globally. Certain terms and conditions would apply for this capacity to be reached.
