H2Gen Innovations Commissions Hydrogen Purification Plant for Saudi Polyolefins Company

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--H2Gen Innovations Incorporated (Alexandria, Virginia) recently announced that the company has successfully installed and commissioned a hydrogen purification facility for Saudi Polyolefins Company (Jubail, Saudi Arabia), a subsidiary of National Industrialization Company (SAU:2060) (TASNEE) (Riyadh, Saudi Arabia). The facility, located at the TASNEE polyolefins complex in the Al-Jubail industrial city, will have the capacity to process 1.5 million standard cubic feet per day of gas.

Established in 1985, TASNEE is the first joint stock company in Saudi Arabia to be 100% owned by the private sector. The company's portfolio consists of more than 20 companies with interests in the chemical, metal, petrochemical and other sectors.

As per the agreement, H2Gen completed the design, manufacturing, erection and commissioning of the plant, which is built on the firm's patented pressure swing adsorption (PSA) MARS technology. The plant will process waste gas of low value into hydrogen. The hydrogen produced will be utilized in the proposed augmentation of TASNEE's polypropylene and polyethylene plants in the same location. TASNEE, which operates the world's largest propane dehydrogenation plant in Al-Jubail, is a leading name in the global plastics industry.

The MARS system, which can recover about 80% of the gas stream, compresses gas from the recovery facility at a low temperature and purifies it to 99.999%. With the assistance of a stripper unit consisting of solvents, the MARS system removes a wide range of contaminants. The tail gas, which is again compressed along with the product gas, is used to run the boiling unit, which is fired by waste heat.

The hydrogen purification unit in Al-Jubail consists of three modules: the PSA unit, the screw compressor unit and the redundant reciprocating compressor unit. All three modules, along with the electrical, civil, mechanical, and control systems, have been built and packaged by H2Gen.The plant has been completed as part of a forward-contract in one year.

The patented PSA technology has no piping connecting vessels and valves. The system is corrosion-resistant and also does not require welding. The MARS hydrogen purification system is globally acknowledged as robust and efficient, providing significant savings in operating costs. MARS is also environmentally sustainable, as the system tremendously reduces carbon-dioxide emissions. The hydrogen that is recycled eliminates the production of fresh hydrogen, which is usually generated by the process of methane reforming, which emits considerable amounts of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The programmable logic controller allows the system to operate at an optimum level through real-time load management and pressure sensing. The system, which is easily integrated into an existing facility or operations, can also be used to extract pure helium and argon.
