Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--HDR Incorporated's (Omaha, Nebraska) long-standing reputation as one of the premier U.S. engineering firms for transportation, infrastructure and power transmission projects recently has been complemented by a growing role in the closely watched liquefied natural gas (LNG) industry. Industrial Info's project database is tracking $16.03 billion in active projects involving HDR in some capacity, with about 62% of the total investment value found among the 10 highest-valued projects. More than 93% of the total can be attributed to three industries: Power, Industrial Manufacturing, and Oil & Gas Production.
By far the largest project involving HDR is Kinder Morgan Incorporated's (NYSE:KMI) (Houston, Texas) $2.5 billion Elba Island LNG liquefaction plant and its planned, $1.5 billion addition of a second train. Last month, Kinder Morgan announced that the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) approved the company's plan to add liquefaction and export capability to its Elba Island LNG Terminal, also approving the upgrading of existing pipelines for the project, according to OilPrice.com. With the facility expected to become a net exporter of LNG, Kinder Morgan said that it "stands to be a positive factor in the overall balance of trade between the U.S. and other countries." For more information, including project specifications, current schedules and contractor contact information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the LNG liquefaction plant and its second train.
HDR MEI Incorporated (Pooler, Georgia), a subsidiary, is serving as owner's engineer on the project, which is owned and managed by Kinder Morgan's subsidiary Southern Natural Gas Company LLC (Savannah, Georgia). HDR purchased MEI LLC, an LNG consulting firm and provider of gas processing, hydrocarbon storage and transport infrastructure services, in January 2015.
In the Power Industry, HDR is at work on two natural gas-fired, combined-cycle (NGCC) power station on opposite sides of the country: Alliant Energy Corporation's (NYSE:LNT) (Madison, Wisconsin) $700 million Marshalltown Generating Station in Marshalltown, Iowa, and Invenergy LLC's (Chicago, Illinois) $700 million Clear River Energy Center in Burrillville, Rhode Island. While the Marshalltown project is under construction and set to be completed next year, the Clear River project is facing fierce opposition from environmental activists and local residents, who are concerned about locating the facility so close to Rhode Island's Pulaski State Park and Recreational Area. Supporters, including Governor Gina Raimondo, say the facility would create much-needed jobs in Rhode Island and help temper the state's electric rates, according to Providence Journal.
HDR is performing engineering services on both projects, and is serving as owner's engineer on the Clear River project. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the Marshalltown project and the Clear River project.
The largest project involving HDR in the Industrial Manufacturing Industry is one of several commuter-rail plans: Sound Transit's (Seattle, Washington) $952 million, 7.6-mile light rail extension in Seattle, Washington. The extra track certainly is needed: According to Railway Track & Structures, Seattle has seen a record-breaking growth in ridership following the March openings of stations serving its Capitol Hill and University of Washington areas. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
The five other highest-valued projects involving HDR are:
