Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Hensel Phelps (Greeley, Colorado) was ranked among Engineering News-Record's top 20 U.S.-based contractors for 2017, a status that is reflected in its expanding list of projects, particularly in growing sectors such as technology components and public transportation. Industrial Info is tracking more than $13.5 billion in active projects involving Hensel Phelps, all of which are in the U.S. and nearing or under construction.
The highest-valued projects involving Hensel Phelps are from the technology side of the Industrial Manufacturing Industry. Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) (Santa Clara, California) is employing the contractor at its $7 billion expansion of a semiconductor-manufacturing plant in Chandler, Arizona. The massive project will accommodate the production of a tiny item: 14-nanometer computer chips. An Intel official told an Arizona radio station that the chips eventually will be only 7 nanometers, two generations ahead of current technology.
Construction of the new fabrication plant was put on hold a few years ago after sales of Intel's microprocessors dropped, but the company now says the Chandler facility will be the most advanced semiconductor factory in the world. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) (Redmond, Washington) is employing Hensel Phelps as general contractor on two expansions at its data center in Boydton, Virginia, one of the world's largest cloud computing campuses: the $402.4 million BN6 building and the $251.6 million BN7 building. Each will have four modular data halls; BN6 will have four mechanical equipment rooms, while BN7 will have one. Both are expected to wrap up over the summer. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the BN6 and BN7 expansions.
Microsoft also recently announced it had begun work to complete a promised expansion of its data center in Cheyenne, Wyoming, following an 18-month delay. The tech leader is planning the expansion as part of a "significant financial investment" in Cheyenne's economy over the next five years, according to Wyoming Eagle Tribune. Hensel Phelps is serving as general contractor on the $200 million Phase II, which is set to wrap up in the coming months, and the $200 million Phase III and $200 million Phase IV, which are preparing to kick off construction around the same time. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on Phase II, Phase III and Phase IV.
Hensel Phelps also is at work on a series of airport construction projects, including a two-phase terminal modernization project at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport in Washington state. The $250 million Phase I, already under construction, includes a 201,000-square-foot extension with eight new gates; the $200 million Phase II, set to kick off next year, will renovate the existing portion of building and perform seismic upgrades. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on Phase I and Phase II.
Other airport projects involving Hensel Phelps include a $490 million expansion at Los Angeles International Airport that will add a five-level terminal building to ease congestion, and a $203 million expansion at Nashville International Airport that will add six gates and 115,000 square feet. Both projects are expected to finish construction in mid-2020. For more information, see Industrial Info's reports on the Los Angeles and Nashville projects.
Hensel Phelps is joining Capital Rail Constructors (Herndon, Virginia) to perform design-build services for Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority's $2.78 billion, second-phase Dulles Metrorail Corridor Silver Line expansion in Arlington, Virginia. Under construction since mid-2014, the project has been plagued by delays. But it has been taking shape over the past year, according to The Washington Post, and will extend Metro service to Dulles Airport and into Loudoun County when it is completed in 2020. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
