Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--After signing an order last week for 12 gigawatts (GW) worth of solar panels to be used in renewable energy projects, Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) (Redmond, Washington) hasn't slowed down in its drive to become carbon-negative by 2030. The company recently made a power purchase agreement (PPA) for the offtake from a solar farm being constructed by Apex Clean Energy Incorporated (Charlottesville, Virginia) in Erie County, Ohio, about 50 miles west of Cleveland.

Construction on the Wheatsborough solar farm began last summer, with DEPCOM Power Incorporated (Scottsdale, Arizona) providing engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services. When completed, which is expected early next year, the facility will have more than 230,000 solar panels to provide nameplate generation of 125 megawatts (MW). While Microsoft has signed several PPAs in regard to the output of specific power plants that are being built, it is with increasing frequency making deals with companies to provide carbon-free generation from a company's multiple carbon-free plants, matching output 24/7 with one or more data centers' power consumption.

For example, last year, Microsoft signed a deal with Engie (La Défense, France) to provide an equivalent amount of renewable energy as the energy consumed by select data centers in Texas. Another move last year places the emphasis on "carbon-free" electricity, rather than solely renewable energy. Microsoft signed an agreement with Constellation Energy Corporation (NYSE:CEG) (Baltimore, Maryland) to procure nuclear generation designated for the operation of Microsoft's data center in Boydton, Virginia, accompanying previously procured wind and solar purchases for the facility's consumption. Apex is no stranger to PPAs with big tech firms either. Last summer, for example, the company signed a PPA with Google parent company Alphabet Incorporated (NASDAQ:GOOGL) (Mountain View, California) for the output of the Timbermill Windfarm in North Carolina.

Construction on the windfarm is expected to begin later this year, although the project has been in the works for several years. The facility will have 45 turbines, each rated at 4.2 MW, to achieve nameplate generation of 189 MW. Other Apex projects with PPAs in place include the Angelo solar plant in San Angelo, Texas, construction of which began early last year. When completed later this year, the 195 MW of generation will go toward powering Facebook parent Meta Platforms Incorporated's (NASDAQ:META) (Menlo Park, California) facilities. Not all companies' PPAs with Apex are for the full generation of an entire facility. For example, Apex has signed at least two PPAs for partial offtake from the planned Goose Creek Windfarm in Illinois. Apex and electric vehicles manufacturer Rivian Automotive Incorporated (NASDAQ:RIVN) (Irvine, California) signed a PPA for 50 MW of the plant's power in late 2022. Last year, Apex increased its agreements involving the Goose Creek plant by putting in place a PPA with agricultural giant Cargill (Wayzata, Minnesota) for another 50 MW of the plant's output.

Construction on Goose Creek is expected to begin later this year, putting the plant on track to begin generating power for the likes of Rivian, Cargill and the surrounding community in 2025.
