Some of Hensel Phelps' largest projects are those in the transportation sector, including light rail and airports. Among these is the Silver Line expansion of the Dulles Metrorail Corridor in the Washington, D.C., area. The $2.78 billion project entails the construction an 11.4-mile rail extension along with six stations and a new rail yard and maintenance facility. The Phase II project is the final phase of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority's Silver Line construction and includes a station at the Washington Dulles International Airport. Construction on the project began in mid-2014 and is expected to be completed this summer. Hensel Phelps is providing design-build services. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Other projects involving Hensel Phelps in the transportation sector include the Terminal 1.5 expansion and the modernization of terminals 2 and 3 at the Los Angeles International Airport in California. The Terminal 1.5 expansion includes the construction of a five-level, 417,575-square-foot terminal building between the existing terminals 1 and 2 to ease congestion and provide connectivity between the terminals. The project kicked off in late 2017 and is expected to wrap up this summer. The modernization of terminals 2 and 3 began last year and has several aspects, including the construction of a new 830,000-square-foot building, the rebuilding of the ticketing buildings and apron improvements. The $1.86 billion project is expected to be completed in late 2023. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the Terminal 1.5 expansion and modernization of terminals 2 and 3.
Some of the largest projects in the Industrial Manufacturing Industry are the for manufacture of semiconductors, a cyclical market that sees upgrades every few years. In Chandler, Arizona, Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) (Santa Clara, California) is continuing and completing construction on its mothballed Fab 42 chip manufacturing plant, which was completed in 2013, but never opened. The new construction will enable the plant to produce Intel's 7-nanometer chip. Construction began in late 2017 and is expected to be completed by the end of 2021. Hensel Phelps is the general contractor. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Data center projects also feature in Hensel Phelps' work, and in Leesburg, Virginia, the company is underway with Phase I construction on a facility for Compass Data Centers (Dallas, Texas). The construction is the first phase on a 750,000-square-foot complex with 60 megawatts of power and entails constructing a 251,000-square-foot data hall with supporting equipment to expand regional colocation operations. Construction began in the summer of 2018 and is expected to wrap up this quarter. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Hensel Phelps also has some smaller projects in its portfolio, including the dismantlement and demolition of the utility plant at the men's central jail in Los Angeles. The project is part of a $3 billion plan to replace the 1963 facility and includes dismantling and demolishing three natural gas steam boilers, chillers, cooling towers and emergency generators. The facility will be replaced with a mental health treatment center with a new and improved central utility plant. The project is expected to kick off this quarter and be completed in the summer of 2022. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Later this year, Hensel Phelps will kick off Phase II construction of Ball Corporation's (NYSE:BLL) (Westminster, Colorado) lens and antenna manufacturing plant in Westminster. The project includes constructing a 172,000-square-foot building addition with supporting equipment to increase space and support new growth. The project is expected to be completed by the end of this year. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
