Illinois Ethanol Plant Expansion Construction Highlights $974 Million Industry Expansion Plans

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas) -- Farmer cooperative owned Illinois River Energy LLC (Rochelle, Illinois) has begun construction activity on a planned plant expansion at the company’s existing fuel ethanol plant located in Rochelle, Illinois. The existing 50 million gallon per year ethanol plant has been in operation since December 2006, and the company announced expansion plans before the facility went into full operation.

Plans are to double capacity to 100 million gallons per year. This will require significant fermentation, distillation and dehydration capacity expansion. Fagen Incorporated (Granite Falls, Minnesota), which built the original plant, will act as the design-build contractor for the estimated $100 million project. Construction is expected to take about sixteen months to complete.

The additional capacity is expected to be online by early 2009.

Ten other operational ethanol plants in the U.S. are planning expansion or already expanding capacity to the tune of more than 625 million gallons.

These eleven ethanol expansion projects will require an investment of $974 million to engineer, outfit and construct at existing ethanol plants in the Midwest and Great Lakes regions.
