Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). While it is not known for its Food & Beverage or Industrial Manufacturing industries like sister states Illinois and Ohio, nor for being an automotive powerhouse like Michigan, Indiana is the jack-of-all-trades of the Great Lakes region. Year in and year out, Indiana chugs along generating significant capital and maintenance spending numbers, neither the highest nor the lowest in the region. While these numbers are not in line with the massive annual spending budgets of some of the other states in the region, Indiana is currently anticipating that over $2.4 billion worth of project work will commence during 2006, which is almost equal to 2005s final total of $2.5 billion.
Gap measurement shows that project fallout has been traditionally high in the state. In 2005, project fallout reached 45% and 2006 is shaping up to have similar numbers. Currently, 2006 project fallout is hovering around 16%, indicating a strengthening market, but those figures will increase as the year progresses.
The big four spending industries of 2005 will once again be leading the pack in 2006. The Power industry is the overall spending winner with just over $1 billion worth of projects anticipated to begin construction this year. Power is followed by the Industrial Manufacturing industry at $610 million, the Metals & Minerals industry at $486 million and the Pharmaceuticals/Biotech industry at $139 million.
Some examples of key projects that are scheduled to begin construction this year include a proposed $200 million coal gasification 281-megawatt addition, a proposed $200 million steel minimill addition, a proposed $150 million 1080-megawatt coal station reverse osmosis addition, a proposed $150 million university phase II & III utilities plant rebuild, and a proposed $150 million grassroot fuel ethanol plant.
Without the fanfare of its larger neighbors, Indiana continues to produce significant numbers that help support the nations largest spending region. Content in its supporting role, Indiana is key to the continuity of the region and will continue to produce these numbers, regardless of the attention paid to the big spenders next door.
