Italian Refining Industry Stands Out in E.U.

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--With 17 refineries, Italy has one of the largest refining industries in the European Union and is the E.U.'s second in production, following Germany. Italy produces approximately 100 million tons per year of refined products.

Five major refining areas exist: Northwest, Northeast, Tyrrheno, Adriatico and the Island region. In the Northwest area, there are three refineries in Sannazzaro, Cremona and Trecate. The 170,000-barrel-per-day (BBL/d) Sannazzaro refinery has 24 operational units and was built in 1953 by ENI SpA (NYSE:E) (Rome, Italy). The Cremona refinery has a capacity of 71,700 BBL/d and belongs to Oilinvest BV (Budapest, Hungary). The facility contains 15 operational units. The Sarpom refinery, located in Trecate, is owned by ExxonMobil Corporation (NYSE:XOM) (Irving, Texas) has 24 units and produces 140,000 BBL/d.

The Northeast region has two oil complexes in Venice and Mantova. In Mantova, MOL Hungarian Oil & Gas (Budapest) owns a 52,000-BBL/d refinery with 16 units; in Venice, ENI SpA owns a refinery with a capacity of 80,000 BBL/d and 21 units.

Three refineries are in the Adriatic Sea: the Alma Petroli refinery, which has three units and is the smallest refinery in Italy. This facility produces only bitumen. The Api Ancona refinery, with a capacity of 85,000 BBL/d, has 17 processing units, while the 130,000-BBL/d Taranto refinery has 30 units.

In the Tyrrhenian sea, the Iplom Refinery from IPLOM SpA (Genoa, Italy) started production in 1931 and works with nine units with a nominal capacity of 34,900 BBL/d. The Rome refinery has 12 processing units and a capacity of 86,000 BBL/d. ENI SpA's 100,000-BBL/d Livorno refinery has 30 units.

Finally, six production sites are in the Island region. ENI SpA's 120,000-BBL/d Gela Refinery has 30 units, and the 260,000-BBL/d Milazzo Refinery, also owned by Eni SpA, has 31 units. Separately, there is a petrochemical complex called Priolo Gargallo, which contains three refineries. Two ERG SpA (BIT:ERG) (Milan, Italy) plants are connected via pipeline. The 214,000-BBL/d Priolo Gargallo ISAB Sud refinery has 20 units, and the 160,000-BBL/d Priolo Gargallo ISAB Refinery Nord with 12 units. Also, the Esso Italiana Augusta refinery, owned by ExxonMobil, has 27 units. The 329,000-BBL/d Saras refinery has 23 units and is the largest refinery in Italy. The plant is owned by Saras SpA (BIT:SRS).
