Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Japan Solar Silicon Company Limited (JSS) (Chiyoda, Japan), along with Nichiyo Engineering Corporation (Toda, Japan), is constructing a polycrystalline silicon plant in Kamisu, Ibaraki, 100 kilometers east of Tokyo. JSS is a joint venture between Chisso Corporation (Chiyoda), which has a 50% stake in the venture; Nippon Mining Holdings Incorporated, a subsidiary of JX Holdings (TYO:5020) (Chiyoda), which has a 30% stake; and Toho Titanium Company Limited (TYO:5727) (Chigasaki, Japan), which has the remaining 20% stake.
Due to the rising demand for solar energy, JSS decided to revise the original plan to construct a plant capable of producing 3,000 metric tons per year of polycrystalline silicon, utilizing its zinc reduction method. In May 2009, JSS announced that it would break ground on a new plant, with a 4,500-metric-ton-per-year production capacity, to be phased in during the next few years. The mechanical installation of Phase I (660 metric tons per year) began in April and is set to begin operations late in the year. Consecutive phases, the last of which is scheduled to be completed late in 2013, will increase the production capacity to 4,500 metric tons per year.
In order to meet Japan's demand for polycrystalline silicon for use in the ever-growing solar generation industry, JSS is determined to quickly establish a stable supply of high-quality, low-cost polycrystalline silicon. A second expansion, which will increase the plant's production facility to 10,000 metric tons per year, is scheduled to begin early in 2014.
