Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway (NYSE:BNI) (BNSF) (Fort Worth, Texas) has selected Garner, Kansas as the site for a $200 million intermodal hub center and park to handle cargo truck and rail distribution.
Plans are to construct a new intermodal hub center and logistics park on a 1,200-acre site to bring Asian goods by way of Pacific ports to be transported by train to the park. The intermodal hub will include private storage warehouses and distribution facilities. A developer is expected to be selected in September 2006. Construction is anticipated to begin in the spring of 2007, with overall completion slated for 2009.
HDR Engineering, Incorporated (Kansas City, Missouri), an architectural and engineering consulting firm, was selected to provide preliminary design studies for the new hub.
Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) was founded in March 1970 via the merger of four primary railroads: Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad Company (CS&Q); Northern Pacific Railway Company (NP); Great Northern Railway Company (GN) and the Spokane, Portland and Seattle Railway Company (SP&S). BNSF is composed of approximately 40,000 employees and includes 6,300 locomotives, with 32,000 route miles and 220,000 average freight cars. Over 5 million intermodal shipments (containers or truck trailers) were transported on BNSFs rail lines in 2005. BNSF railway operates services in the mid and western United States.
