Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). When it comes to industrial plants, no county in the U.S. has more than Los Angeles County, California, which is home to 534 major operational industrial plants. Also home to the largest population in the U.S., approaching ten million as of the last census, Los Angeles County has a well-established industrial base serving as the manufacturing and distribution hub for West Coast markets.
Second on the Top 10 Industrialized U.S. Counties List is Cook County, Illinois, with 477. For details on industrial project spending in Cook County, Illinois, see related March 8, 2005, news article - Cook County Illinois Looking at $1.3 Billion in Planned Industrial Project Spending. Rounding out the big three U.S. industrialized counties is Harris County, Texas, with 448 plants. After the big three, the number of plants drops significantly, by almost half, as the fourth largest industrialized county is Maricopa County, Arizona, with 232 plants.
The industrial landscape of Los Angeles County is changing. Fewer and fewer industrial manufacturers are choosing to locate new manufacturing plants or expand existing ones in Los Angeles County, choosing instead to locate in neighboring counties or states, away from the big city and its environmental opponents to manufacturing. That doesn't mean that there isn't a lot of industrial activity in Los Angeles County, it simply means that the money is shifting from manufacturing mainly to infrastructure and energy development. There is also a large market for maintaining the existing fleet of operational plants in the county.
There is currently more than $5 billion in industrial project activity planned to begin construction in 2005 or beyond for Los Angeles County. The larger of these projects involve either transportation infrastructure construction, or are energy related. Two of the larger transportation projects involve expansions of light rail systems in the area, at a cost of more than $2 billion. Sound Energy Solutions (Long Beach, California) is working with the Port of Long Beach to construct a $400 million LNG terminal at the port. There are also numerous plans for power plant construction or expansions of existing plants. The Petroleum Refining Industry is looking at $332 million in project work at the county's petroleum refineries and lube oil production plants.
Take away the transportation and energy sectors, and Los Angeles County is devoid of any major industrial projects over $10 million, with the exception of the Pharmaceutical & Biotech Industry, which has several research and development facilities in the works at the county's universities, and colleges.
