Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Luna Innovations (Blacksburg, Virginia) will spend an estimated $6 million to construct a new nanomanufacturing plant in Danville, Virginia (Plant 1063643). Construction and renovation of a former tobacco warehouse to occupy the new plant is planned to begin this summer immediately creating over 50 new technology driven jobs when complete in 2005. The new plant will be located off Bridge Street and consist of approximately 10,000 square feet of production area.
Carbon nanomaterials produced by Luna are intended for use in research and development including development of radio-pharmaceuticals aimed at treating cancer. The nanomaterial produced in this new plant is called a trimetasphere molecule and currently Luna is the only producer of this product with an existing pilot operation in Blacksburg, Virginia.
This new plant is part of a growing trend to produce carbon fibers for use in commercial and military applications; see related articles titled - Nothing Nanoscale About the Scope of Lawrence Lab's $85 Million Molecular Foundry Lab Construction Project in Berkeley and A Full Scale Carbon Nanotube Plant Planned For Texas.
