Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Maquiladoras in Mexico play a crucial role in promoting and expanding the phenomenon of nearshoring. The facilities serve as a means through which many companies relocate part of their production to Mexico to take advantage of its competitive labor costs and strategic location, especially in relation to the United States.
About 30% of these plants are located in the state of Baja California Norte, followed by Tamaulipas at 10%, as well as Chihuahua, Coahuila and Nuevo León. It is expected that this manufacturing model will continue to expand as more foreign companies choose to establish maquiladoras in Mexico to benefit from tax incentives and preferential trade agreements.
This will not only generate more employment and industrial development but also contribute to greater integration of Mexico into international supply chains. In summary, maquiladoras will continue to drive the nearshoring phenomenon by facilitating production close to key consumer markets.
