Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). At the beginning of the year, analysis of Industrial Infos project database revealed 4,590 industrial capital and maintenance projects, totaling about $177 billion, were being evaluated to begin construction in the U.S. in 2006. For details see February 13, 2006 news article - Industrial Infos Top 20 States for Industrial Project Development in 2006.
Now, with 40% of the year behind us, an analysis of current data, taking into consideration all updates made since the beginning of the year, shows that there are 5,437 active projects totaling $163 billion, which have either started construction or are scheduled to begin construction in 2006. Of that amount, 163 projects, representing $603 million, have been identified as being complete, most of which are planned maintenance shutdowns that occurred during the first quarter. However, there are a few large capital projects including a $40 million distribution center in Washington, and an expansion of a poultry processing plant in Hickory, Kentucky, both of which began and have already been completed this year.
Since the beginning of the year, Industrial Info has added 1,523 new projects in the U.S. These projects are actively scheduled to begin construction in 2006. In addition, Industrial Info has identified 585 projects, totaling $60 billion, originally scheduled to begin construction in 2006 that have been put on hold or cancelled. Taking into account new project additions and project fallout (on hold, cancellations, deferrals), results in the total current active project count for 2006 at 5,437.
Updating the Top 20 States list finds four new states on the list including Kentucky, Indiana, Michigan, and Mississippi. States falling out of the Top 20 States list include New Mexico, Oregon, South Carolina, and Missouri.
Texas, California, Ohio, Louisiana, and Virginia lead the list of the top states for industrial project spending in 2006. Texas is number one with 427 projects for $19.2 billion, which is an increase in projected industrial spending of 4% since the beginning of the year. Texas has twice as much project activity as second place California, which has 247 active projects totaling $8.24 billion.
