Mexico's Laguna Verde 1 Nuclear Power Plant Authorized to Operate for Another 30 Years, an Industrial Info Market Brief

On July 24, the first unit of Laguna Verde Nuclear Power Complex finished its first 30 years of operation. A week before, the owner and operator of the complex, Comision Federal de Electricidad (CFE), completed successfully the renewal process started in March 2015, and the license for operations was extended for another 30 years through July 2050.

The Laguna Verde Nuclear Complex, located in the State of Veracru,z has two GE Hitachi boiling water reactors running two 810-megawatt steam turbine generator sets. As mentioned, the first reactor started operation in 1990, while the second started operations in April 1995, and CFE is already working its operating renewal. Between 2007 and 2013, both units underwent a modernization and uprate project that extended their life and increased their capacity by 20%. Since then, both units have operated continuously except for refueling outages every 18 months--the next ones planned by August for Unit 1 and for the last quarter of the year for Unit 2.
