Milligan Bio-Tech Holds Grand Opening Event Today for New Saskatchewan Biodiesel Plant

The ceremony will be held at the plant site at 907 Highway 16 East in Foam Lake, roughly 95 miles northeast of Regina. Lunch and tours are expected to start around 11:30 MST, followed by a demonstration of the world's first biodiesel jet truck.

The plant crushes canola seeds into oil and through a transesterification reaction system, produces 10 million liters (2.6 million gallons) of biodiesel that meets and exceeds North American ASTM D6751 fuel specs. The fuel retains a pour point of minus 15 degrees Celsius, while biodiesel made from other feedstocks has difficulty flowing at negative temperatures.

The plant also produces co-products including diesel fuel conditioner, penetrating oil and road dust suppressant. The plant has an estimated total investment value of about $3 million.

Milligan also becomes the fifth operating biodiesel plant in Canada. Other producers include Biox Corporation (Hamilton, Ontario), Canadian Green Fuels (Regina, Saskatchewan), Rothsay Biodiesel (Guelph, Ontario) and Western Biodiesel (Calgary, Alberta).
