Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--At least 13 coal-fired U.S. power plants are scheduled to shut down in 2016. In total, the plants provide employment to more than 1,300 people and generate more than 5,500 megawatts (MW) of electricity.
See below for a breakdown, by state, of plants Industrial Info projects will shut down in 2016.
The youngest plant that is slated for closure next year began to generate electricity in 1982, and the oldest came online in 1942. The largest plant, in terms of capacity, is the Colbert Power Station in Alabama, and the smallest is the R.E. Burger Power Station in Ohio. On average, these plants have been in service for more than 60 years.
Using the guideline of 1 MW to power 1,000 homes, the capacity of the power plants set for closure next year amounts to enough electricity to power 5.5 million homes. For related information regarding coal-fired power plant closures in 2015, see October 15, 2015, article - Two Coal-Fired Power Plants to Shut Down This Year, a Dozen More Next Year
NOTE: "Capacity" refers to the estimated current generating capacity, and not the overall design capacity. Several plants are running below their previous maximum outputs. The shutdown dates shown in this table are subject to change. Industrial Info customers should use their PECWeb access to track plant information when updates are made.
