Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--NextEra Energy Incorporated's (NYSE:NEE) (Juno Beach, Florida) subsidiary, Florida Power & Light, has announced the start of construction of its Desoto Next Generation Solar Energy Center in Arcadia, Florida.

The center will consist of a 74-megawatt (MW) photovoltaic addition of a SunPower Corporation (NASDAQ:SPWR) (San Jose, California) single-axis tracking solar array. This addition will bring the center to a total generating capacity of 99 MW.

Overland Contracting Incorporated (Garner, North Carolina) and Black & Veatch (Overland Park, Kansas) are working together as the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) teams on the job. The teams plan to have construction finished and commercial operations reached by the first quarter of 2017.

NextEra Energy owns more than 1,452.4 MW of solar power generating assets in the U.S., Spain and Canada.

DeSoto Next Generation Solar Energy Center will be the company's first operational solar-powered facility in Florida.

However, NextEra has several other Florida solar sites that are due to become operational in the next few years. These projects include: Marshall Solar (62.25 MW), Citrus Solar (74 MW), Manatee Solar (74 MW) and Babcock Solar (74 MW). Marshall iSolar is expected to be online by the second quarter of 2017. Citrus, Manatee and Babcock are expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2017

In other parts of the U.S., NextEra has about 1,031 MW of solar projects in the pipeline. The largest is the 350-MW Sonoran Solar Facility in Arizona. It is in the planning stages and is set to be online in the summer of 2019.

The second largest is the 250-MW McCoy Solar Park in Riverside County, California, which is currently under construction. It is expected online at the end of 2016.

The third largest is the Blythe Solar Park, also in Riverside County, California. Phases I and II are under construction at 125 MW each, and the park is expected to become operational within the last quarter of 2017.

The firm also has approximately 125 MW of solar power projects in Ontario, Canada that it expects to be online in 2018, and an additional 75 MW in 2019.
